If you need any advice please contact us as above or telephone + 44 (0) 7973 984154 or (0) 754 3533071.
On making your order enquiry we will send you confirmation of all costs and will set out conditions of payment in advance of your order confirmation. You will need to check the documentation and confirm, by email, that it is correct and that you wish to place the order.
Our preferred method of payment is by way of UK bank transfer, details of which will be included in the invoice we send. Payment will need to be made prior to shipment. If an order is placed from outside the UK and you cannot make payment through SEPA we will accept payments in UK £ through Wise, which if they serve the Country you are in, give a good exchange rate and only make small charges for small payments, the other alternative is PayPal, but their exchange can be less generous, and these payments might be subject to a % charge, unless you send the payment in £, fund your Paypal account from your bank account and not credit card, and payment is sent 'to friend', we can accept them in exceptional cases. We cannot accept cheques.
Items in stock will be dispatched shortly following payment. All items are sent by Courier or Postal service.
Orders can be sent outside the UK and are usually post free providing the postage fee does not exceed our free postage allowance for sending within the UK, which occasionally might mean there is a small additional p&p charges, but we will always advise you at the time of the order being placed of any extra p&p costs.
All orders must be accompanied by a copy of your BTO ringing permit or ringing authorisation/permits from your country of origin.
Mist net manufacture notes:
The nets are supplied in the usual 3,6,9,12 and 18m lengths (without net bags). The new supply, have all black loops, so it might be worthwhile using some white electrical tape to mark the top loop once you have used the net once. Unfortunately we have experienced that some of the loops have broken, and this has been caused where the metal clip on the loops has been crimped snagging the cord making the odd one or two susceptible
Nets are usually made of Polyester or Nylon. There are various views on the durability of either material, but either is suitable providing their are made of multifilament material and not monofilament. Monofilament nets can cause injury to birds unless the nets are monitored constantly and they are removed quickly, as this material is rougher and can cause injury to birds in them more frequently. We will therefore never sell monofilament nets.
Net strengths (thicknesses) used for ringing commonly are 70d (denier), often referred to as super fine, 75d or 110d (standard passerine mesh thickness, with 110d being slightly stronger, but slightly more visible), and 210d, which is usually used for heavier species, but is much more obvious than 70 or 75d material. Basically the higher the denier the slightly more visible the nets will be, but also means they are more durable. There can be a pay off between net life and net visibility. The strength of the net can be increased by using different ply. Net strength is measured by multiplying the mesh size by the ply, so for example 70d/2ply has a strength of 140, 75d/3ply the strength is 225, and for 110/2ply is 220. So, a 75d net of 2 ply, with a strength of 150, will be less durable than a 75d 3ply net with strength of 225.
Mesh size commonly used for passerine ringing is 15*15 (sometimes referred to as 30mm) or 16*16mm (referred to as 32mm), which is a passerine size mesh, good for the majority of the catches consisting of Warblers or small passerines, with 19*19 mm (38mm) for Thrushes or small waders, and 30*30mm (60mm) for bigger birds such as Owls and Waders, and 45*45 (90) for raptors. Care needs to be taken using large mesh sizes as smaller birds can become more entangled in them. The nets should be more closely supervised and checked more frequently, than you would 14mm, 16mm or 19mm mesh nets.
